Muntadar al-Zeidi, a TV reporter charged with two counts of assaulting United States President George W. Bush with his shoes was tried and convicted early Monday morning.
Al-Zeidi, a reporter with an Iraqi-owned station based in Egypt, hurled his own shoes, yelling in Arabic: “This is a farewell kiss, dog.” at George W. Bush on Sunday afternoon at a press conference in front of the international media.
Monday morning Muntadar al-Zeidi was sentenced by the Iraqi government to be pummeled by flip flops for 20 minutes. Al-Zeidi requested that his feet be amputated instead, saying “I wish to be seen as a martyr in the shoe throwing community by my foot apparel tossing peers.”
The request was denied and Al-Zeidi was removed from the court barefooted.
To Arabs, throwing shoes at someone is a sign of contempt.
